16% of patients in the UK account for 34.5% of GP time - are you spending your time wisely?

One of the leading pressures in general practice is the growing prevalence of multiple illnesses. The number of patients with three or more long-term illnesses has almost doubled since 2005, from 9.7 per cent of people to 16 per cent in 2019.

New research has shown that GPs are spending more than a third of their time on patients with three or more long term conditions, even though this group account for only 16 per cent of the population.

But at SmartLife our own research showed that the problem is the frequent attenders who do not have serious health conditions, not the ones who need clinical support.

SmartFlow breaks down practice data and shows you a breakdown of appointment data by clinical time and administrative time - and cost. It's designed not only to help GP practices be more efficient but to ensure equitable access of time to all your patients who need care and advice.

"Stigmatising patients with long term conditions is not the way we should do things in medicine: those patients need our care and many are likely to be taking part in treatments or long term health reviews and it is great that they take the management of their health seriously," says Dr Jay Verma.

"We know this can prevent a condition from worsening and in cases like diabetes, good condition management can actually reverse the condition."
